Abstract:

This paper examines the contribution of socio-economic inequality in education to socio-economic inequality in health. The education gradient in health outcomes is a well established socio-economic phenomenon. There is a growing literature on the effectiveness of education in producing better health outcomes, most of which focuses on identifying causality. The focus of our paper is on educational inequalities and their effect on health inequalities. Using data from 22 European countries collected by the European Social Survey, a concentration index for health is decomposed into its constituent parts. The contribution of income-related inequality in education to income-related inequality in health in measured and discussed.
