Women Religious and the ‘Troubles’: Community Oral History Project
Thursday 11th April, 2019, 11.00-12.00, O’Rahilly Building, Room ORB G20, UCC.
Organised as part of the Cork Life Long Learning Festival, by the School of Adult and Continuing Education in association with the School of Applied Social Studies, UCC.
A presentation of an original community oral history research project exploring the multi-faceted roles of women religious workers, ordained and lay, Protestant and Catholic, from community activism to secret talks, during the Troubles in the North.
The session includes women religious workers in recorded conversations discussing their experiences and activism in the North and its significance in promoting peace and societal change.
One aspect of the research involves interviews with sisters from the South who were often despatched North. They often found themselves, with no preparation, in a virtual war zone. One such, Cork born Bon Secours Sister, Consilia Mary Dennehy, will participate in the event. Sr. Consilia spent 34 years in the West Belfast parish of St Agnes, experiencing the brunt of the Troubles, and worked on the ground in the local community at times of political turmoil. An ardent supporter of Vatican II, before returning to Cork, Sr. Consilia was Northern Co-Director of the Conference of Religious in Ireland and a recipient of the prestigious Belfast Ambassador Award, presented in 2016.
The event will be presented by Dr. Dianne Kirby, Trinity College Dublin, who initiated the original research project and is known for her pioneering work on the religious dimension of the Cold War.
Free - all welcome. Organised by Adult and Continuing Education with the School of Applied Social Studies, UCC
