Abstract: The lecture will offer an analysis of the translational processes involved in the transmission and mobility of the work of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal in exile. The research re-traces the work of two key Brazilian thinkers, Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal, seeking to ascertain how their concepts of the oppressed have been shaped and transformed by translation and were assimilated by different cultures. Freire dedicated his life to the development of a theoretical model that generates an educational practice to end illiteracy and to challenge social inequality. Boal’s community theatre was inspired by Freire’s practices and the possibility to work with other forms of expression to empower the oppressed.

The projects were developed in parallel. Both authors had to flee Brazil after a conservative dictatorship took power in 1964.

In exile, they published Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Theatre of the Oppressed. Emerging international recognition of their practice led to translations into many languages. Due to their authors’ international mobility, both texts went through various processes of translation including self-translation, indirect and collaborative translation. By mapping and analysing these processes, this project responds to the call in these thinkers’ work, and at the same time seeks to measure what light they can shed on the theory and practice of intercultural translation; to explore translations as sites of encounter between diverse voices that call for us to listen and be more attentive to social and cultural difference.
