Dr Sahondra Kiplagat

Lecturer at the University of Nairobi

Dr Kiplagat is a lecturer in psychology at the University of Nairobi who works in the areas of the psycho-social effects of natural disasters, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and gender and environment.

Sahondra Kiplagat holds a PhD in environmental psychology (She is the first and to date the only environmental psychologist in Kenya). She is a lecturer at Nairobi University in Kenya, in the psychology department. She is a member of the Quality Board, postgraduate Studies Committee and Welfare committee at the university. Sahondra’s research interests are in the areas of climate change, natural disasters and their impact on communities and individuals, as well as policies to mitigate their effects. She also has had an interest in gender. She attended the 5th World conference for women in China in 1995 where she held a workshop entitled "young African women". She was 24 at the time. Since its inception in 2004, she has participated in fundraising for Starehe Girls School. This is a school that offers free secondary education to exceptional, bright girls throughout Kenya. (Currently only primary education is free in Kenya. Secondary education can be beyond the reach for many). Sahondra also has deep concern for the disabled in the society. She is interested in universal accessibility and in counselling the disabled. She was the patron for councillors at the National Spinal hospital. Sahondra is active in her Anglican Church in Kenya. She enjoys many of the natural spaces in Kenya. She enjoys taking walks in and Karura forest, minutes from her home (it is one of the largest gazetted forests in the world fully within the city limits). The forest provides a quiet space for her, being surrounded by the serenity of nature in all its diversity and enables her to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city), she loves swimming and the ocean. The natural environment is a passion for Sahondra both in her working life and in her personal life.
