At UCC, our graduates are highly sought after around the world for their education, skills, expertise, creativity and innovation. But we do not measure success purely in terms of students’ grades and achievements, but also in the quality of their college experience. We want everyone to enjoy every aspect of their time here and to take our strong values with them when they complete their journey after graduation.

Therefore, we believe that sexual violence and harassment has no place in our institutions. It is unacceptable that any student or staff member should experience it. To read some definitions of consent, sexual violence, sexual misconduct, and sexual harassment, click here (https://www.ucc.ie/en/edi/speakout/terminology/).

UCC recognises the profound effect that sexual misconduct and sexual violence can have on the lives of our staff and students.  We want our staff, students, and visitors to feel safe and supported, and feel that they can trust that the University will listen to them and will support them in whatever way it can.

In Ireland, higher educational institutions (HEIs) adhere to the Consent Framework, which is formally known as the Framework for Ending Sexual Violence and Harassment in Irish Higher Education Institutions. Sexual Violence and Harassment Framework | University College Cork (ucc.ie), also known as the Consent Framework. This Framework is a policy document from the Department of Education & Skills that sets out expectations in terms of institutional culture, organisational procedures and structures, and targeted initiatives for students and staff.

This framework identifies seven main areas to target to address sexual violence and harassment (SVH) on campus.  These areas are:

  • Training and education
  • Ongoing messaging
  • School / unit-based initiatives
  • Student services
  • Care and support
  • Complaints processes
  • Monitoring and evaluation

Any initiative to address sexual violence and harassment must be Safe, Respectful, Supportive, and Positive in order to achieve a culture of zero tolerance towards SVH across Ireland. To learn more about why this approach is essential, please click here.

The Sexual Violence and Harassment Prevention and Response Manager is based in the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Unit, based in the South Lodge.  Please click here to contact them.

June 2024 saw the launch of the Safe and Sound pilot program which provides comprehensive messaging targeting sexual violence and harassment across social media platforms, posters, digital signage, and events. Read more about Safe and Sound here

UCC is currently finalising a Sexual Misconduct policy, to be enacted in 2025. Currently to report sexual violence, students can contact Campus Watch and staff can contact HR. If your situation is not a fit for this procedure, these policies may be more appropriate:
