This year, the EDI Unit was delighted to partner again with Celine Griffin and the Bystander Program in sharing a 40 minute slot in undergraduate orientations. Students were shown content from Active* Consent, We-Consent, and the Government of Ireland, and were given examples of how to be a bystander, how to practice consent in their personal lives, relevant laws, how to report an incident, and where to seek support if needed. Students were reminded that everyone has a role to play in addressing sexual violence on a individual and community level.

This year, International studies and postgrad students also received orientation content in their presentations as well as an formation stall, with many expressing how essential this was as they had not previously received education or information on sexual violence in their home countries.

There were eight different points of engagement for students in Orientations:

  1. Stalls
  2. Longer presentations in undergraduate orientations
  3. Shorter presentations in international orientations
  4. Slides included in orientations for international and postgrad students
  5. Posters/leaflets
  6. Digital Signage
  7. Social media
  8. Freshers Fest magazine content.

Stalls were also held for Societies Day, Clubs Day, and Freshers Fest, with positive engagement from students across all events. These stalls were interactive as we invited students to share their thoughts on what it means to be Safe and Sound.

Between these engagements, students were informed of 8 internal services and 21 external services such as Cork Sexual Violence centre.  They also had access to 11 different kinds of freebies from sweets to consent information, badges, pens, information booklets, and more.

The Students Union were supplied with consent materials and they created a Consent Wall in the Student Union building, providing a visible commitment to addressing sexual violence in a high traffic area at such an important time of year.
