  • UCC and Cork ETB celebrated the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Tertiary Route.
  • For more than 50 years, UCC has been at the forefront of social work education, research, and practice.
  • This new collaborative initiative between UCC and Cork ETB provides an accessible route for students progressing from further education into higher education.

On World Social Work Day, University College Cork (UCC) and Cork Education and Training Board (Cork ETB) celebrated the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Tertiary Route – an innovative and inclusive pathway designed to enhance access to social work education. The event, held on UCC’s campus, was marked by a symbolic tree planting ceremony, reinforcing the values of sustainability, resilience, and community connection that underpin both social work and education.

This collaborative initiative between UCC and Cork ETB, through the Cork College of Further Education and Training (FET), provides an accessible route for students progressing from further education into higher education. The BSW Tertiary Route ensures that aspiring social workers have the opportunity to pursue their vocation and make a meaningful impact in society.

A milestone in social work education

Speaking at the event, Professor John O’Halloran, President of UCC, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to tertiary education as a force for positive change: "On this World Social Work Day, we not only celebrate this academic pathway but also reaffirm our commitment to the values of social work—sustainability, human rights, social justice, and community empowerment. Just as a tree requires strong roots to flourish, so too do our students require a strong foundation in their education and experiences to support them to grow and to thrive."

He acknowledged the importance of partnership in making this initiative a reality, thanking Cork ETB for their collaboration in creating a seamless and supportive transition for students moving from further education into university.

Bridging the gap: UCC and Cork ETB partnership

Denis Leamy, Chief Executive, Cork ETB, described the new pathway as a transformative step forward in education accessibility:

"The BSW Tertiary Route is a shining example of how we can break down barriers to education. It provides an alternative entry into higher education, allowing students to build confidence and develop their academic skills in a structured, supportive environment. Through this partnership, we are not only strengthening individual learning journeys but also preparing compassionate, skilled professionals to serve our communities."

The impact of social work in society

Guest speaker Wayne Dignam, CEO of Care Leavers Network, reflected on the crucial role social workers play in shaping lives and supporting those most in need, including his own experience as a care-experienced individual:

"Social workers make a profound difference in the lives of children, families, and communities. Today, we acknowledge not only the dedication of students and educators but also the essential work of social workers in society. This programme will open doors for a new generation of graduates, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, and empathy to support others."

Tree planting: A symbol of growth and commitment

The event concluded with the planting of a birch tree on the UCC campus, dedicated as a living symbol of the social work profession and the positive change it fosters. The birch tree, traditionally associated with renewal and resilience, was chosen to reflect the enduring commitment of educators, students, and practitioners to creating a more just and compassionate society.

‘Like the deep roots of the birch that strengthen and sustain it, social work is built on connections, between generations, communities, and those in need of support,’ said a student representative during the dedication.

A shared vision for the future

The BSW Tertiary Route marks the beginning of a significant new chapter in social work education, one that will empower students, strengthen communities, and uphold the values of dignity, equity, and collective responsibility.

UCC and Cork ETB remain committed to expanding access to education and ensuring that social work training is inclusive, impactful, and grounded in both academic excellence and real-world experience.
