Academy Award-winning director Régis Wargnier to visit University College Cork for special public event

Academy Award-winning director and screenwriter Régis Wargnier, one of the leading figures in international cinema, will visit University College Cork (UCC) for a special public event on Monday, March 2 from 2:00pm to 3:15pm.

‘In Conversation with Régis Wargnier’ will explore Wargnier’s distinguished career and the craft of storytelling that has defined his work for more than three decades.

The event will take place ahead of the screening of his latest film, Redress (La Réparation), as a part of the 37th Cork French Film Festival. It is supported by Alliance Française de Cork and the French Embassy in Ireland.

The discussion will be hosted by Dr Barry Monahan, Senior Lecturer in Film and Screen Media at UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, and will examine the director’s artistic influences, major works, and perspective on the changing global film landscape.

Ahead of the event, Dr Monahan said: “We are delighted to welcome Régis Wargnier to UCC for this important event: it is a wonderful opportunity for cinephiles to meet and hear the ideas and inspiration of a magnificent film artist. Wargnier is an undeniable master of cinema, and one of the world’s leading and most important artists in the medium. His canon has been celebrated internationally and awarded the highest accolades by the most prestigious film academies and festival communities.”

After beginning as an assistant director and production manager, Régis Wargnier directed his first feature film, La femme de ma vie (1986), which won the César for Best First Feature. He followed this with I’m the King of the Castle before achieving international acclaim with Indochine (1992), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a Golden Globe, and multiple César Awards.

His filmography, marked by historical themes and intimate human stories, includes Une femme française, East–West, Man to Man, Pars vite et reviens tard, and Le temps des aveux. Régis Wargnier has also directed documentaries, served on numerous international juries, and chaired the Fonds Sud. He is also a novelist, having published Les prix d’excellence (2018) and La dernière vie de Julia B. (2022).

Event details

‘In Conversation with Régis Wargnier’ will take place on Monday, 2 March. Admission is free, with seating allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are advised to be seated by 1.45pm, with the discussion commencing promptly at 2.00pm.

The event will take place in UCC Film and Screen Media facilities at University College Cork, located in Room B10.B, Kane Building, on the main campus. Find us on Google Maps.
