Deep Maps: West Cork Coastal Culture Schools Visit
As part of the Deep Maps: West Cork Coastal Cultures project we wanted to engage with primary school children from our study area in West Cork.
On April 4th, we visited 5th and 6th classes of two schools (Glengariff and Baltimore) and distributed a short questionnaire to determine what they value about the coast/sea; did they know any problems to do with the coast/sea; and how do they access information about the coast/sea. They will also have input through art work and storytelling with maritime themes for the Deep Maps Project.
Dr Rob McAllen gave a fascinating talk about the coast/sea and conservation efforts along with using specimens of animals to spark their interest in all things marine. They were thrilled to be able to look at the marine animals up close.
The children were very engaged and the visits were a great success!
