School of Pharmacy Open Day

4 Jan 2013

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork held its annual open day on January 3th 2013.  The aim of this event is to provide a taste of the UCC course for leaving certificate students who are interested in a career in pharmacy.

Morning talks provided students with detailed information about the Pharmacy Course in UCC (CK703).  Here brief introductions to the four core degree subjects were presented.  Lab based sessions in the afternoon put some of this knowledge to use and students get to meet the School staff.  This year the 53 attendees were introduced to tablet making, they synthesised aspirin and they provided diagnosis for symptoms in a Community Pharmacy setting.

Finally, the day was closed by Head of School, Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll with a question and answer session.

Student feedback was very positive with 85% reporting that the day’s experience would encourage them to study Pharmacy.  One student captured our aims with her feedback comment: “I really enjoyed the day; it broadened my view of Pharmacy and Science as a whole”.

We hope to see some of these students in the first year Pharmacy class of September 2013 !
