Developing New Disciplinary Norms in Social Profession Education and Practice'

A webinar conference titled 'Sustainability and the Environment: Developing New Disciplinary Norms in Social Profession Education and Practice' was facilitated by Fiachra Ó Suilleabháin, Catherine Forde, Mary Hurley, School of Applied Social Studies & Angela Flynn, School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC on the 6^th  November 2020.

Keynote speakers included: Dr Eurig Scandrett, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, UK; and Dr Satu Ranta-Tyrkko, School of Social Work, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Whilst practitioner speakers included: Ann Moran, Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator and member of Green Flag Committee, Cork University Hospital, Cork; and Maeve Foreman, M.Litt Social Work and Mud Island Community Garden, Dublin.

It was great to hear about the sustainability,  Green Flag work at CUH and the potential global impact of inaction. The session asked us to consider how we ethically and politically relate to the future where we empathise and consider ourselves and our community being inextricably linked with the future of  distant others and distant places.

The session overall helped to share knowledge on the connections between climate change and  the Social Professions, build the capacity of educators and practitioners to envisage and develop innovative environmental education practices through interdisciplinary collaboration, and facilitate co-operation between colleagues from the Social and Health Professions in higher education and practice settings.

The session was supported by CACSS Interdisciplinary Research Fund and the  National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning.
