An on-going health promotion initiative to educate adults with intellectual disability

On May 21st, a group of people visited the Clinical Skills Simulation Resource Centre facilitated by Ms. Sile Divane (CNS-Communication) and Ms. Anne-Marie Martin (Lecturer and Programme Leader-BSc Nursing: Intellectual Disability) as part of an on-going health promotion initiative to educate adults with intellectual disability around the importance of a healthy lifestyle and health screening. This year, the focus has been on healthy food choices, exercise and hearing screening. During the session, the group examined anatomical models of digestive, cardiac and respiratory systems as well as a skeleton and ear. They learned about the importance of healthy eating and benefits of exercise for overall well-being. They also learned about how our ears enable us to hear. The session was active and practical as the group were encouraged to ask questions and explore the anatomical models in order to understand how our bodies work. Their curiosity around body functioning was fulfilled through active exploration of the anatomical models. The group enjoyed the session and are eager to return again to learn more about health and well-being.
