‘Transmission, Translation and Dissemination in the European Middle Ages, 1000-1500 AD’ will showcase some exciting research developments in medieval studies, from Friday 28 to Saturday 29 September at UCC.

The conference will address the topic of the transmission and translation of texts, as well as the dissemination of ideas in various mediums and contexts across the medieval period in Europe.

It will welcome 20 speakers and 50 delegates from universities and research institutes across Ireland and the UK, continental Europe and the United States.

Two keynote lectures will be delivered: ‘Dealing with the Devil? The Alchoran latinus of 1143 and growing knowledge of Islam’ (Dr Anthony Lappin of the University of Manchester); ‘The transmission of the Gospel of Nicodemus in Ireland’ (Dr Caoimhín Breatnach, University College Dublin).

The conference is co-organised by Dr Elizabeth Boyle (University of Cambridge) and the Forum for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Ireland. The Forum is an all-Ireland association that promotes the study of early periods. It is run by Dr Ann Buckley (Queen’s University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin), Dr Carrie Griffin (Queen Mary, University of London and UCC) and Emer Purcell, MPhil (UCC).

The event is generously supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the School of History and the School of English, University College Cork, and The Society for the Study of Medieval Languages and Literature (based at the University of Oxford).
