Teaching and Learning Award for UCC Academic
22.10.2010

Ms Fiona Buckley, lecturer in the Department of Government, UCC, has been awarded the 2010 Teaching and Learning award of the Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI).

In presenting the award, President of the PSAI, Professor Gary Murphy of Dublin City University, commended Fiona’s commitment and dedication to the promotion of innovative teaching and learning practices in political science.  “Your teaching portfolio clearly set out your goals, objectives and experiences and displayed clear evidence of innovation and engagement in both assessment and teaching methods. Above all, what shone through is your enthusiasm and passion for the teaching and learning of politics”.

The awarding panel was particularly impressed with Fiona’s work regarding employability and employer engagement - of key importance especially during the current economic climate.  Fiona is responsible for the establishment of the BSc Government work placement programme which places students in a variety of political organisations in Ireland and abroad on an annual basis.  More recently, Fiona has established an undergraduate journal of research in UCC with her colleague, Dr Theresa Reidy.  This journal was established with funding from the National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL).
