Leukemia award for UCC PhD student
22.10.2010

At the annual Meeting of the Haematology Association of Ireland (HAI, October 15th-16th, 2010), PhD student Maura Hannon received an award for best scientific presentation.

Maura is completing her PhD with Dr Karen Keeshan on a project funded through the SFI-PIYRA and an IRCSET scholarship.

The title of Maura’s presentation was “The regulation of Trib2 expression in normal and acute myeloid leukemia cells). The project focuses on how the leukemia associated gene called Trib2 becomes misexpressed in leukemic cells compared to normal cells. The high expression of Trib2 in leukemia specifies a unique leukemia profile that characterises the different subtypes of leukemia. The HAI includes medical, nursing and scientific members, and the annual meeting attracts speakers of the highest international standing from all areas of haematology. Dr Keeshan’s laboratory is based in the BioSciences Institute within the department of biochemistry. Maura Hannon has completed her first year of her PhD research.
