The majority of students come from the USA with representation also from Canada, Mexico, the UK, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
This year’s School, The Western World’s Furthest Shore: Landscape, Memory and Irish Identity, takes its title from the writings of St Columbanus and from one of the earliest expressions of Irish identity in literature.
In lectures, seminars, and a series of field trips to points of interest in Munster, the students explore identity formation at key junctures in Ireland’s past, and in the works of major Irish writers. Students are also offered introductory classes to Irish.
One of the longest running interdepartmental programmes in the University, the School is now in its thirty-first year, and began as a joint initiative between the departments of History and English, under the direction of Professor John A. Murphy and Professor Seán Lucy, in partnership with Loyola University, Chicago.
The students were welcomed by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, who recalled his own experiences of teaching in the University of Chicago for the North American students.
