Science Week at UCC
02.11.2010

UCC will celebrate National Science Week, which takes place from November 7th to 14th, by hosting a series of events on campus throughout the week.

The aim of Science Week is to promote the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives and to demonstrate the importance of these disciplines to the future development of Irish society and to the economy.

The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) has invited primary and secondary school students into UCC to participate in many exciting and interactive events during Science Week. Students will have the opportunity to don their lab coats and step into the “Investigator Vortex” where a selection of challenging experiments and tasks from across many scientific disciplines await. Mathematics will be explored in the “Magic Mathsworks Travelling Circus”, students will experience the world of Microbiology in “The Good, the Bad and the Bubbly of Microorganisms”, while junior classes can participate in a science-themed treasure hunt along the Main Quadrangle. A series of interactive workshops and demonstrations have been developed for secondary school students in areas including food and nutritional sciences, genetics and computer science, while a number of workshops on technology will be delivered in the Science and Technology Teaching and Learning Centre.

The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre will also host a series of events during Science Week including a public forum titled “TB- A re-emerging problem?”, visits to a number of Primary Schools in Cork with an interactive presentation on the Circulatory System and the Science RAPS competition.

The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and the Tyndall National Institute will also have interactive exhibitions at the Cork Science Festival “Discovery”, which will take place in the City Hall from Saturday 13th to Tuesday 16th November (http://www.corkcity.ie/discovery/)

Students and staff are invited to come along and visit the Investigator Vortex in the Atrium of the Western Gateway Building at lunch time throughout the week to experience some of the excitement of Science Week!
