Philanthropy in Nineteenth-Century Ireland

The School of History, UCC will host the annual Society for the Study of Nineteenth Century Ireland (SSNCI) conference on Thursday, 17th and Friday, 18th June. Organised by Dr Larry Geary and Dr Oonagh Walsh, the conference theme is ‘Philanthropy in Nineteenth Century Ireland’.

A wide range of new research in the field will be presented at the event.

Themes to be addressed include the role of medicine in charitable relief; voluntary work amongst disadvantaged groups and state-funded initiatives through agencies such as the Poor Law. Speakers from across the Irish university system will be joined by colleagues from North America, Australia and continental Europe. The latest book in the SSNCI series, edited by Dr Ciara Breathnach and Dr Catherine Lawless, will be launched at the School of History, Tyrconnell, on the evening of June 17th.

The keynote speakers are Professor Maria Luddy of Warwick University, and Professor John Wilson Foster of Queen’s University Belfast/University of British Columbia.
