The funds will be used to continue Professor Cotter’s work on understanding the underlying molecular basis of both childhood and adult leukaemias. In particular, the work will focus on how leukaemia cells activate survival pathways regulated by a family of Nox enzymes. These enzymes generate oxidase stress which both helps tumour cells to survive by activating signal transduction pathways and enhancing DNA mutations. The money will fund both a PhD student and Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Professor Cotter’s laboratory. His laboratory currently has 14 researchers with a blend of clinicians and scientists.
Professor Cotter is a previous winner the Boyle Medal and is one of Ireland’s most cited scientists and currently Head of the Biochemistry Department.
