01.02.2010

The Faculty of Law held its annual prize-giving ceremony recently for participants of the second-level Law Essay Competition 2009/2010.

The competition is open to secondary school students throughout Ireland. The aim of the competition is to encourage students to consider the relevance and impact of law on various aspects of their lives and society generally.

A record number of essays were received and the Faculty of Law was impressed by the very high quality of the submissions. The essay competition attracted entries from students in Sligo, Westmeath, Kildare, Meath, Kilkenny, Waterford, Clare, Tipperary and Dublin as well as local students from Cork city and county.

Issues considered by participating students included the role of the law in protecting   children from abuse, the prosecution of white collar criminals, President Obama’s policy on civil liberties, the protection of refugees, cultural rights and the Travelling Community and whether pre-nuptial agreements should be enforced by Irish courts. The best six essays were identified by members of the Law Faculty and each winning student was awarded a prize of €200.

The prize giving ceremony commenced with a welcome and opening address from Prof Steve Hedley, Dean of the Faculty of Law. This was followed by a short lecture on each of the essay topics from members of the Faculty.
