Irish Feminisms donated to UCC Boole Library
30.04.2010

Dr Mary Pierse, Editor has donated a 5-volume anthology, Irish Feminism 1810-1930, to UCC’s Boole Library.

Co-published by Routledge and Edition Synapse, the History of Feminism series makes key archival source material readily available to scholars working in literature, history, women’s and gender studies, women’s history, and women’s writing, and in allied fields. The facsimile reproduction of original material adds to the interest of the documents.

The set brings together a unique selection of the multiple feminisms articulated by Irish writers between 1890 and 1930.  The five volumes foreground a multiplicity of beliefs and attitudes from novels, poetry, short stories, newspaper and journal articles, and essays, both by relatively unknown and by more celebrated writers (such as Lady Gregory, Lady Wilde and the Parnells).  While the history of feminism universally reveals conflicting interpretations of the female role in society, the situation in Ireland was significantly complicated by the backdrop of national uprisings, land war, world war, and the growing hegemony of a strongly religious patriarchy.

Mary Pierse completed her PhD in the School of English, where she taught, and was subsequently a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow. She is the editor of George Moore: Artistic Visions and Literary Worlds (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2006). She said it gave her great pleasure to present the 5-volume set to UCC and paid tribute to the School of English and the Library and its wonderful staff.  “More than anything, I hope that its contents might encourage many others to explore further in the field and so expand our knowledge of a relatively recent period of Irish history.” Dr Pierse is now continuing her research on the work of George Moore, on literary impressionism, and 19th-century Irish writing.  She is also involved on the editorial and scientific boards of literary publications in Ireland, France and Spain.

Mr John FitzGerald, UCC Librarian/Director of Information Services acknowledging the appreciation of the university in obtaining this series, said: "This is an important and valuable contribution to our collections.  I thank and congratulate Dr. Pierse, a distinguished former colleague, whose donation celebrates the role of UCC Library as a source collection in the creation of this monumental series."
