Ireland and European Integration: Membership, Influence and Contribution – UCC Conference

The theme of Ireland and European integration will be the focus of a conference taking place at UCC on Friday, 22nd and Saturday, 23rd January 2010.

The conference titled “Ireland and European integration: membership, influence and contribution” is hosted by UCC’s School of History and has attracted a wide range of distinguished speakers from the worlds of academia, politics, the trades union movement and business, each of whom will analyse different aspects of this crucial issue in modern Irish history.

The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese will open the conference on Friday evening at 7pm. The list of speakers for Saturday includes Tom McCarthy (Chief Executive of the Irish Management Institute), Áine Hyland (Emeritus Professor of Education in UCC), David Begg (General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions), Martin Mansergh (Minister of State) and Dr Garret FitzGerald, former Taoiseach and former Chancellor, National University of Ireland.

This event is being organised by Professor Dermot Keogh and Mervyn O’Driscoll, Gabriel Doherty and Kathryn McGarry of UCC’s School of History, and is one element in a broader IRCHSS-funded project on the topic of Ireland and European integration, which is hosted by the School of History in UCC.

The proceedings will take place on the Friday in the UCC’s Aula Maxima and on the Saturday in G10 in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on College Road.

The conference is open to the public and is free of charge, but owing to restrictions of space those who wish to attend President McAleese’s address are asked to reserve their places in advance.
