How to deliver health in an efficient and effective manner is ever more important in the current climate.

Studies presented at the first Health Economists’ Study Group (HESG) Conference taking place in UCC on June 23rd-25th 2010 will include the role of health insurance in health systems, productivity, funding and reform of hospitals; pricing, competition and innovation of prescription.

Other areas up for discussion are caesarean section rates in Ireland – are we really “too posh to push”; the effect of socio economic factors on obesity levels and their link to life expectancy and analysing the links between mental health and job attainment and maintenance.  And, in an age where Google and others are a key source of patients’ information, the notion of health literacy is explored and investigated from an economic perspective.

The Health Economists’ Study Group, popularly known as HESG, exists to support and promote the work of health economists.  Although the HESG has an academic function, to create and transmit knowledge and ideas, its members work in commercial, academic and government settings also. Research by group members is applied and policy orientated, grounded in economic theory.

The HESG conference will take place from June 23rd-25th 2010 in The River Lee Hotel (formerly Jury's). For further details see http://www.ucc.ie/en/economics/HESG2010/ or contact hesg2010@ucc.ie
