Industry and academia have joined forces this week (March 8th-12th 2010) to showcase careers in the high-tech sector to talented transition year students with aspirations towards careers in science and engineering.

Tyndall National Institute, UCC and Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) play host to a group of students participating in the first year of a coordinated Transition Year Work Experience programme.  18 students are participating in the programme from 13 Cork schools including St Vincent's Secondary School, Midleton College, Douglas Community School and St Mary's Secondary School in Charleville.

With support from the Department of Electronic Engineering, CIT and the Department of Electrical Engineering, UCC and world-class companies such as EMC, Intel, Moog, ON Semiconductor, Option Wireless, Horner and Flextronics, the transition year students will experience a week that is designed to give a comprehensive insight into all aspects of research and engineering careers.

Innovation is a key aspect of engineering and the students will participate in a competition to find the most innovative idea based on projects undertaken during the programme.  Each member of the winning team will receive a Flip Mini Video Camcorder.

Tyndall and CEIA run a number of valuable outreach initiatives which give students a real opportunity to see the career possibilities available to them in this area. “This successful collaboration affirms the commitment of industry, research institutes and second level education to foster the talents of the next generation of engineers and scientists” commented Rosemarie Ferriter, physics teacher at St Vincent’s Secondary School, Cork. “To create the leaders and innovators of tomorrow we must begin today with our young people”, she added.
