Cork Team Wins 2010 National Elec Eng Quiz
15.02.2010

Students from Coláiste Chríost Rí, Cork were the overall winners of the National Elec Engineering Quiz that took place simultaneously in UCC and Waterford IT on January 30th last.

UCC has championed this National Quiz and have held a successful Elec Eng Quiz in UCC for the past nine years. This is the fourth time the event has run nationally, with a webcam link between the competing colleges.

The national prize of €1000 worth of equipment for the winning school was sponsored by MIDAS Ireland. As regional winners, each team member also received an iPod Touch and an engraved silver pen, sponsored by ESB International. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering UCC and Cork Electronics Industry Association sponsored the remaining UCC prizes.

The quiz is open to fifth and sixth year students studying honours maths, with a team of four students participating from each school.  The quiz tests the students’ knowledge in Engineering and Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.  UCC awarded prizes to the top five teams in the quiz. A local tie-break saw the team from Presentation Brothers college take second place from Ballincollig Community School. Hamilton High School and a second team from Coláiste Chríost Rí came fourth and fifth respectively. For the first time this year, a prize was awarded to the highest placed team of fifth year students and this was won by Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon.

The event aims to encourage interest amongst students considering CK605 Electrical or Electronic Engineering at UCC with many of the students attending the event indicating that they were considering this as their career choice in their CAO applications.
