Team Math is a national Mathematics competition for 6th Year Secondary School Students. The competition format is based on that of a Table Quiz. Students work in teams of up to four at a table solving eight rounds of problems (and a tie-breaker, if required). At each round, teams are given two/four problems to be solved within a specified time limit. Problems are designed to be sufficiently difficult so that all the students must participate actively, no one/two students could solve all the problems within the time limit. Problems are based on the Higher Level Leaving Certificate Core Syllabus. The competition has been running since 1991 at a local level and there has been a National Final since 2005.
The preliminary round was held simultaneously
at fourteen centres around the country on January 29th 2010 when about 1350 students
sat the test. Students at the different centres got exactly the same problems
and this facilitated the selection of teams to participate in the National
Final.
Students participating in the competition are amongst the very best Mathematics students in the country. The top performing student at the Leaving Certificate Mathematics Examination has been a member of the winning Team Math team on a number of occasions.
The preliminary round was organised by the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association while the Final was organised by UCC’s School of Mathematical Sciences. Funding for the event is raised from external sources; the sponsors this year were the Society of Actuaries Ireland, the School of Engineering, UCC and two SFI-funded research groups: The Edgeworth Centre for Financial Mathematics and the Financial Mathematics Computation Cluster.
