Dr Konstantin Doulamis, a Lecturer in Classics, has been awarded the European award ‘Language Ambassador of the Year 2010’.

The award was presented in recognition of his ‘outstanding achievements in the promotion and teaching of ancient and modern languages’ at UCC and beyond.

The award, which is a prestigious European Commission title managed in Ireland by Léargas and the Department for Education and Skills, was awarded by Professor Tom Collins, Dean of Teaching and Learning at NUI Maynooth, at a recent ceremony in celebration of the European Day of Languages.

Dr Doulamis has been teaching, among other subjects, Greek (Classical, Koine/New Testament and Modern) at UCC since 2004, where he is also Director of the highly successful International Summer School of Greek and Latin. In 2004, he initiated and implemented a project called ‘Classics for all’, which involved visiting secondary schools in the Cork region and promoting the study of Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilisation.

Dr Doulamis is also an accomplished polyglot. In addition to having an advanced knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin, he is fluent in English, Greek, French, Spanish and Italian, and has a good knowledge of Swedish.
