Is there a relationship between intelligence and reasoning ability in children? Will an impulsive person perform better in tests of speed and intelligence?

What are the practices and approaches to the assessment of depression among professionals in Ireland?  These were questions posed in three prize winning papers by Aoife Barrett, Eoin Rickard and Méabh McSweeney at the presentations of research theses by final year students in the School of Applied Psychology.

Over 40 students on the BA Applied Psychology and the Higher Diploma in Psychology presented the papers to the School during a recent two-day event held in the North Wing Council Room.  Topics ranged over the role of optimism in problem solving, trust in interpersonal relationships, strategies for academic success, resilience, memory, and lying.   Papers were based on original research by students who choose their topics from staff members’ research programmes.  The seminars were followed by an informal presentation where the prizes for the three best papers were awarded.

Students were happy, and positive that the experience was beneficial.  “Presenting to a professional audience really helped me to clarify my thinking and to refine the focus of my research”, said Eoin Rickard.

The talks will now be written up and presented for assessment as final year theses.

“The quality of Final Year dissertations in Applied Psychology is excellent, as a succession of external examiners have observed. This annual presentations of students’ research to peers and staff provides an opportunity to celebrate the quality and diversity that is inherent in our discipline, and I congratulate all of our presenters, and their supervisors, on creating a splendid showcase of undergraduate research effort”, said Head of School, Professor John Groeger.
