What is Social Science? – UCC Lecture
02.02.2009

To celebrate 10 years of Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series will commence on Thursday, February 5th with a lecture by Professor Fred Powell, Dean of Social Science, UCC.
Professor Powell will discuss Social Science Research & the Community at UCC. He will pose the question ‘What is Social Science?’ and will argue that it is the study of human society and social relationships.  These are the elemental forces that shape our lives. Social Scientists, through research, seek to interpret these forces and explain their meaning to the wider world.  Drawing upon work carried out by social science researchers at UCC, Professor Powell will explain its relevance to present-day Ireland and the global crisis we are experiencing as a national community.  He will argue that economic analysis of the crisis needs to be balanced by a social analysis based upon social research in order to ensure the sustainable development of our democracy.

Fred Powell is Professor of Social Policy, Dean of Social Science at UCC and Chair of the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21), a PRTLI Cycle 4-funded initiative.  His most recent book The Politics of Civil Society was published by Policy Press, Bristol in 2007.

PRTLI, launched in 1998 by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), heralded a new era for research and innovation, and has fundamentally altered the research landscape in Ireland. The programme supports the development of world class research capacity across all disciplines including the humanities, social sciences, science and technology.

The lecture series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.  It will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The first lecture will take place on Thursday, February 5th at 1.00pm in the Aula Maxima, UCC. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
