The Politics of Trade and Environmental Sustainability

UCC will host a one-day conference on Friday next, February 6th on the politics of trade and environmental sustainability. The aim of the conference is to explore issues relating to global development with particular reference to the global trade regime.
The first session “All Politics is Local: Responses to Global Challenges”, chaired by Dr Aodh Quinlivan of UCC’s Government Department, will discuss the theme with speakers Denis Cotter, Café Paradiso; Jennifer Sleeman, Sustainable Clonakilty; David Stanton TD and Kevin Ryan, Cork County Council.

Session II, chaired by Fiona Buckley of UCC’s Government Department will focus on the subject “Nation State, Global Crisis: Ireland’s Response” with contributors Senator Dan Boyle, Green Party; Seán O’Leary, Munster Vice-President, IFA and Heather Braiden, Government Department, UCC.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin will give a Special Address on the Role of the European Union on Trade and Sustainable Development at 2.15pm.

The third session will discuss “Competing or Cooperating: Warming to the Issue” chaired by Professor Neil Collins, Government Department, UCC.  Speakers will include Nicola McGrath, Trade Links; Colm Burke, MEP and Kathy Sinnott, MEP.

The Conference will conclude with the Closing Address at 4.00pm by Billy Kelleher, TD, Minister for Labour Affairs.

The event will take place in the Council Room, North Wing, UCC and is being organised by third year UCC students of the BSc Government degree and sponsored by the Development Education Grant Scheme of Irish Aid.
