Molecular Medicine Ireland meet in UCC
02.02.2009

The President of UCC, Dr Michael Murphy recently received a courtesy visit from the Chair of Molecular Medicine Ireland (MMI), Dr Damian O'Connell and the CEO of MMI, Dr Ruth Barrington.

MMI was established to accelerate the translation of scientific research into better quality outcomes for patients and to position Ireland as a centre of excellence in molecular medicine research and education.

This not-for-profit company is a joint venture between UCC, University College Dublin (UCD), NUI Galway (NUIG), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) to achieve their common objectives in health research.

According to Professor David Kerins, Dean of the School of Medicine at UCC the aims of  Molecular Medicine Ireland are to accelerate the translation of recent rapid advances in science into new ways of understanding disease and new diagnostics, drugs and devices, to treat illness and protect public health of people.

MMI has also taken the initiative, with its member institutions, to train tomorrow's leaders in health research. A fellowship programme is in place to train medical graduates as clinician scientists. Each of the fellows will undertake a PhD in one of the five member institutions and will also participate in a shared career development programme organised nationally by MMI. Five such Clinical Scientist fellows will be trained at UCC.
