UCC Climbs Higher in World Rankings
08.10.2009

UCC has climbed a further 19 places in the world university rankings and according to the latest Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) survey, stands at 207th place.
Welcoming the news, UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, said he was pleased that UCC, like other Irish universities, had achieved better rankings in the latest survey, but warned that the Irish university sector continued to face a severe financial crisis. “In the face of continued cuts, the danger is that the Irish university sector will be forced into a non-competitive position, thereby affecting our ability to compete internationally at the highest level and drive forward the Government’s own agenda for a knowledge-based economy.”

Dr Murphy added that the strong emphasis on the quality of teaching and learning at UCC and the consistently high quality of its research output, as well as the student experience, were positive factors influencing this year’s THES placings. The rise also reflects the massive capital investment by the University in infrastructure and student facilities in recent years.

UCC now has a total student population of more than 18,000. Research income exceeded more than €90 million for 2008-2009 and the number of research staff has grown to more than 1,300 people.

The improvement in UCC’s world ranking also reflects the growing international nature of its campus and student body as well as the increasing number of global affiliations with top 100-ranked sister institutions.

Since 2002, more than €400 million has been invested in UCC’s  capital programme including major projects such as the Western Gateway Complex, the Tyndall National Institute extension, Health Sciences and the Boole Library.
