Celebrating Positive Ageing at UCC

An exhibition of photographs submitted by the general public as part of Age Action Ireland’s Positive Ageing photographic competition (sponsored by the ESB) will be launched at the Jennings Gallery, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College Road on Tuesday, October 13th.
The exhibition has been organised by the UCC Equality and Welfare Office, in conjunction with the Jennings Gallery, and aims to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing.  The exhibition will continue until November 20th and features works submitted to the photographic competition over the last two years. Ageing and diet, physical health and mental health will be the subject for discussion at a series of seminars taking place at UCC also this month.  The seminars will run from October 14th-20th and include presentations by experts in a number of specific health areas.

The lunchtime seminars are organised by ELDERMET, an Irish research project examining the links between the intestinal bacteria and diet, health and lifestyle in older Irish adults.  

On Wednesday, October 14th the first seminar titled “Proactive Health in Later Life” will be delivered by Dr Suzanne Timmons, Consultant Geriatrician, Mallow General Hospital.  “Diet and Ageing” will be the focus of the presentation by Professor Kevin Cashman, Professor of Food and Health, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, UCC on Thursday, October 15th.  This will be followed on Friday, October 16th with a presentation by Dr Gemma Browne on “Ageing, the Irish Perspective”.  Dr Browne is Senior Lecture in Epidemiology & Consultant in General Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Mercy University Hospital, Cork.

Go for Life Tutor, Ms Maria Ham will discuss “Physical Health in the Older Adult” on Monday, October 19th.    Go for Life is an Age and Opportunity initiative funded by the Irish Sports Council in partnership with the HSE Health Promotion Unit and the Local Sports Partnerships.  The seminar series will conclude on Tuesday, October 20th with a presentation on the theme “Mental Health in the Elderly” by Professor Ted Dinan, Professor of Psychiatry, Cork Neuroscience Group and Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, UCC.
