UCC and Pfizer Ireland collaborate on Leadership Development Programme
08.10.2009

The Department of Management and Marketing at UCC has launched a new programme on Leadership and Organisation with Pfizer Ireland. The course is aimed at Pfizer staff with future senior management and leadership potential.
Twenty-one Pfizer employees, from three sites in Cork and from Dublin, attended the first of 6 two-day workshops at the university recently.  The participants’ backgrounds include chemistry, engineering, HR, finance and quality.

Professor Sebastian Green, Head of the Department of Management and Marketing and Programme Director, welcomed the group to UCC, commenting that “The curriculum, which we believe is highly innovative and relevant in today’s changing business landscape, will enable you develop some of the essential competencies to steer you through your own personal career transitions as well as enabling you to contribute more effectively to the performance of others and to organisational success.  We will do so by reinforcing theory with practical application and through a highly interactive programme, which inspires forward thinking and self reflection.”

The underlying philosophy of the course is to combine formal business knowledge with knowledge of some less well understood and often ignored areas of organisational life that are crucial for personal and organisational success. This combination of what are often referred to as ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ approaches requires a multidisciplinary framework combining psychoanalytic, group dynamic and systemic perspectives to management and organisation, supplemented by financial, strategic and business management ones.

The programme was initiated following discussions between Pfizer and Professor Irene Lynch Fannon, Head of the College of Business and Law at UCC. Dr Paul Duffy, VP Patent Protected Products for Pfizer Ireland, chief Pfizer sponsor of the programme, contributed to the first workshop which focussed on ‘The Task of Leadership’. Dr Duffy commented: “As the development of leaders is such a key component to the ongoing success of Pfizer, I am delighted to sponsor this programme and work with the participants, coaches and UCC to ensure that this most innovative programme will deliver the required results for the business.”
