Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Swine’ Flu Vaccination Campaign begins in UCC
10.11.2009

The Student Health Department has commenced the vaccination programme against Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Swine ‘Flu in UCC. Dr Oonagh McKaigue, who is co-ordinating the vaccination programme in UCC, is pleased to confirm that so far over 280 people have received the PANDEMRIX vaccine over the last five days.
As part of the UCC Pandemic Plan, and in an effort to limit the spread of this highly infectious illness and to protect those most at risk from its effects, the UCC Student Health Department has commenced an extensive vaccination programme against H1N1. As per national guidelines the vaccine will be delivered to students and staff who belong to one of the clinically at-risk groups. Students and staff who have registered their interest in receiving the vaccine have been invited to attend scheduled clinics held on-site in UCC, and there has been considerable interest to date.

“In our first delivery of vaccine we received 500 doses and have administered over 280 so far, with a further clinic scheduled for Wednesday morning the 11th of November” said Dr McKaigue. “We expect to have used our initial allocation by the end of this week, but if demand continues further vaccine will be requested and extra clinics can be organised.”

At the moment it appears that the vaccine needs to be delivered in two separate doses, but the need for the second dose is under review and may change over the coming days.
