Minister voices support for National Centre
22.05.2009

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD, launched a pilot project to a packed audience in Boole 4 Lecture Theatre, UCC last evening (May 21st 2009).
He acknowledged the tremendous work being done by the various bodies within UCC in promoting the sciences among our young people and having been welcomed by Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS), the Minister went on to say:  “This exciting venture tonight involving Transition Year students is intrinsically linked with the ongoing promotion of the Discover Sensors programme and I congratulate both UCC and CIT for their collaborative vision which has brought a new Science and Technology Teaching and Learning Centre to Cork with funding provided under the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) Cycle II.  In the process, a Virtual Teaching and Learning Environment will be developed in CIT in conjunction with two Science laboratories and a Resource Centre based in UCC. I support them in their efforts to establish this creative undertaking as the basis for what will in due course hopefully attain recognition as the National Centre for Teaching and Learning.”

He concluded: “It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to launch this novel project Sensors in Transition this evening and I hope that the seed will blossom and such events will develop on a regional basis and result in a venture similar to the recent Postgraduate Student public presentation competition.”
