International Recognition of Confocal Imaging in the Biosciences Institute
07.12.2009

Cell division is a critical cellular process which involves a parent cell dividing into two daughter cells. These processes are not only critical in reproduction and development but also in replacing damaged cells and tissue.
The Biochemistry Department's, Molecular Cell Biology Laboratory led by Professor Mary McCaffrey, in the Biosciences Institute, study the localization and function of Rab GTPases and their associated effector proteins which have been shown to play crucial roles in the final stages of cell division. A recently accepted manuscript from the group (Kelly, E., et al, 2010) characterising Rab14 localisation and function has been awarded the 'front cover' image of the January 2010 issue of Biology of the Cell.  The image is a confocal micrograph which demonstrates Rab14 (in red) localising the mid-body region during the late stages of cell division.
