Business Ethics Lecture
07.12.2009

The Department of Management & Marketing at UCC is presenting the second in a series of lectures by Maurice Biriotti, Chief Executive of SHM and Adjunct Professor to the Department of Management and Marketing.
The lecture series titled: “Re-humanizing Business” is an exciting and somewhat different lens through which the world of business is usually presented and one which should have wide appeal.

The second lecture takes place on Thursday next, December 10th, 1-2pm, Council Room, North Wing. As each lecture is self-contained, attendance at previous lectures is not necessary.

In this lecture “Rehumanizing Business: Sophocles” Professor Biriotti will pose the questions:  Can we any longer talk with confidence about the notion of business ethics?  Has the field failed us?   He will argue that the so-called academic discipline that has grown up around business ethics is moribund and will suggest a different paradigm, drawing on readings of Sophocles' great tragedy Antigone.

The third lecture "Re-humanizing Business: Tolstoy" will be held on January 25th 2010, and the fourth and final lecture “Re-humanizing Business: Henry James” will be delivered on March 1st.

Maurice Biriotti is Chief Executive of SHM, a specialist consultancy in London that was founded on a strong belief that human motivation is at the root of all business success, whether that involves the creation of propositions to market, cultures, business strategies or practices.  SHM has a high-profile client portfolio, which includes Unilever, Diageo, Tesco, Accenture, The Learning and Skills Council, The Department of Health and The NHS. Before setting up SHM, Biriotti was an academic and taught literature, philosophy, the media and cultural studies at a number of universities, including Birmingham, Zurich, Cambridge and Barcelona.

Since then, Biriotti has engaged in various ways with the problem of how to ‘bridge the gap’ between the academic world and the business world. He is passionate about the potential for these two worlds to engage in a rewarding dialogue – and is particularly keen to foster a truly multi-disciplinary approach, with an important contribution to be made by the Humanities.  He has continued to give talks and have strong links with universities such as UCL and Cambridge, and is a regular speaker at conferences on business and cultural topics.
