University College Cork (UCC) honours its brightest students
08.12.2009

“University College Cork continues to attract students of the highest calibre” said UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy when he presented parchments to 78 Entrance Scholarship recipients at a special awards ceremony at UCC on Monday, December 7th 2009.
Entrance scholarships up to €2000 are awarded each year to students based on their first Leaving Certificate results.  All of the scholarship winners this year achieved 570 points or higher in the Leaving Certificate, across the Colleges of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science, Business and Law, Science, Engineering and Food Science and Medicine and Health.

Dr Murphy said that the Leaving Certificate results attained by UCC students clearly demonstrate the University’s continuing ability to attract the brightest students to its campus. He said almost a quarter of UCC’s first year students had 500 plus points and 37 of these students achieved 600 points.  He congratulated the scholarship holders on their outstanding achievements and paid tribute to the professionalism and commitment of their teachers and the support of their families.

The ceremony, with academic staff and students, took place in the Multifunctional Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn, UCC and was followed by a reception for the scholarship holders, their parents, school principals and guidance counsellors.

Pictured at the Entrance Scholarship Awards Ceremony were L-R:  Nina Fitzpatrick, Deputy Principal, Ellen van Walleghen and Katie Hickey, Mount Mercy College, Model Farm Road, Cork.
