Energy Infrastructure for the Future
06.02.2009

Future energy infrastructure must accommodate not only large centralized power and energy sources but also input from the growing array of distributed resources.
In the next lecture of the Annual College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) Public Lecture Series at UCC, Dr Eamon McKeogh in a lecture titled “Energy infrastructure for the Future” will discuss energy infrastructure for the future and the widespread resources which will include renewable energy from wind, ocean, solar and biomass and the use of bulk and small scale energy storage.  The transition from a simple centralized energy system to a complex multi source system will require a host of new and improved functions.  Dr McKeogh will describe the new architecture and identify changes required for optimized operation of future energy infrastructure.

Dr McKeogh will deliver the lecture on Wednesday, February 11th 2009 at 8.00 pm in Boole IV Lecture Theatre.

Eamon McKeogh is a Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UCC.  His research is focussed on the control and prediction of sustainable energy from sources such as on and of-shore wind, hydropower, and biomass.  He recently investigated the use of pc-clusters for large scale wind energy forecasting and storage scheduling.  Dr McKeogh is currently involved in the development of a National Energy Competence Centre.  His current research project is Assessment of the European Terrestrial Carbon Balance, EU 6th framework programme.

The SEFS Annual Public Lecture Series is organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer, SEFS.  The series of lectures will run weekly until Wednesday, March 25th. Full details of the lectures can be consulted by visiting website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie/pages/SEFS_LectureSeries_2009.pdf

All the lectures will be filmed and the films will be posted on the UCC Public Understanding of Science website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie  The 2007 and 2008 Public Lectures are already posted on this website.

Admission to the lectures is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
