Medical Education in Ireland Changing Times

The School of Medicine, UCC will host the second annual scientific meeting of the Irish Network of Medical Educators (INMED) at a two-day conference on Thursday and Friday next, February 5th and 6th 2009.

INMED seeks to enhance medical education on the island of Ireland by bringing together individuals and organisations with an interest in and responsibilities for medical and healthcare education.

The theme of the 2009 meeting is "Changing Times"and will include contributions from national and international experts in:

A  symposium on entry and selection mechanisms to medical and health care education
Professor Aine Hyland will describe the work of the Points Commission, Dr Hamish Coates and Ms Marita MacMahon Ball, Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) will outline the evidence base supporting aptitude tests currently used while Professor Fiona Patterson, City University London, will provide an overview of entry and selection mechanisms
A review of simulation in the education and accreditation of health care professionals
Will be led by Dr Jean Ker Director of the Institute of Health Skills and Education, Dundee University, and founder of the Scottish Clinical Skills Network
A panel discussion on research in medical and healthcare education
Facilitated by Professor Tim Dornan (Manchester) Professor John Spencer (Newcastle) Professor Marilyn Hammick (Best Evidence Medical EducationGroup (BEME).

Conference workshops will focus on a range of themes including:

•    Challenges in the assessment of health care professionals 
•    The professionalisation of healthcare education
•    The role of humanities in the education of health care professionals
•    The Bologna process – where are we now?

INMED members will also present their research in oral and poster presentations. Student participation is encouraged and there are specific prizes for student submissions.

The event will take place in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complexes and has been sponsored by the National Academy for Integration of Research & Teaching (NAIRTL).
