Eminent US Geneticist visits UCC
20.02.2009

UCC’s Department of Microbiology recently hosted a visit by Professor Aaron Mitchell, renowned microbiologist and geneticist. Professor Mitchell, formerly of Columbia University, NY, USA is now with Carnegie Mellon University, PA, USA.
Professor Mitchell’s visit highlighted the collaboration between UCC and Carnegie Mellon University.  Professor Mitchell, along with Professor Douwe van Sinderen of UCC’s Microbiology Department jointly supervise Saranna Fanning’s PhD research.  Saranna is the recipient of a National University of Ireland (NUI) Travelling Studentship.

During his visit, Professor Mitchell met with members of the Department of Microbiology and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC).  He delivered a presentation on the work his laboratory is pursuing on the opportunistic pathogen, Candida albicans.

“The collaboration between the two universities is in line with the Higher Education Authority’s desire to create fourth level systems in Universities in Ireland involving international collaborations, with the aim of increasing knowledge and capabilities”, said Professor van Sinderen.

“The NUI Travelling Studentship has afforded me the opportunity to combine the research knowledge of the probiotics research group at UCC and the yeast genetics expertise at Professor Mitchell’s laboratory”, explained Saranna.  The NUI Travelling Studentships are designed to encourage postgraduate students to pursue research and provide the opportunity to study abroad towards a doctoral degree in the most reputable universities, and eventually attract these scholars back to Ireland to enrich the learning community in the NUI. Further information on the NUI Travelling Studentships can be found at: http://www.nui.ie/awards/postgraduates.asp
