Conference of the Asian Studies Ireland Association (ASIA)

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin TD, will present a keynote speech at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Asian Studies Ireland Association which takes place today, Friday, November 13th 2009.
The Conference brings together leading academics and Asia researchers and watchers from around the world, to focus on the transformation of Asia within a changing global environment.

This year the event will include foreign delegates from the Centre of Modern Contemporary Chinese Study, University of Le Harve, France, Leiden University, The Netherlands, the Brussels Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies, Belgium, University of Kuopio, Finland and Hainan University, China.

Co-ordinated by UCC’s School of Asian Studies and Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, the conference will run a series of panel based workshops and seminars which aim to focus on the impact of the global economic crisis on the Asian economies, the different responses of the various Asian governments to the crisis and the different perceptions of the crisis between European and Asian societies. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion focusing on Ireland’s ‘Celtic Tiger’ past and how such issues are relevant to both regions.

The Asian Studies Ireland Association was established in November 2008 in Cork, in order to promote the study in Ireland of Asia under a broad range subjects concerning developments in the Asian region. ASIA works closely with partner third level institutes and think tanks, to develop critical mass in and to add value to, research initiatives on modern Asia and its relationship with Ireland.

ASIA aims also to provide research support for education and also to the developing network of Irish business within the Asian region, though lecture series, workshops and seminars. The organization welcomes interested bodies from all backgrounds and specifically welcomes membership of representatives of foreign embassies, public administration, NGO’s and international organizations with an Asian interest.
