Cork cancer scientists brief American scientists in New York

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Cork Cancer Research Centre at UCC, Enterprise Ireland and the Consul General in New York hosted a reception to highlight the work of the Centre to interested parties in the United States.

Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC introduced the Centre's research which is investigating the critical challenge of secondary cancer (metastases) and is directed at three principal research themes: Cell Death and Cell Survival Mechanisms; Gene Therapy; and, Novel Therapeutics and related Devices.  
 
Among those who attended the reception to hear about the research were scientists from Cold Spring Harbour, Weill Cornell Medical College, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Merck Research Laboratories, and Johnson & Johnson.
 
The evening was hosted by Mr Niall Burgess, Consul General of Ireland and Ms Loretta Brennan Glucksman, Chairman American Ireland Fund.

Picture shows: Attending the reception were Nobel Laureate, Dr James D Watson from Cold Spring Harbour and Dr Ita Lynch, member of the Cork Cancer Research Centre Board.  Dr Watson is best known for his discovery of the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), for which he shared with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.   Dr Lynch currently works as a Health Advisor for Realizing Rights, the Ethical Globalization Initiative founded in October 2002 by Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
