Architectural Award for UCC’s Postgraduate Library

Wilson Architecture has won the International Architecture Award 2008 for UCC’s Postgraduate Library.
The global competition, run by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, is the only truly worldwide architectural award scheme and the UCC development was the sole Irish winner among worldwide winners including The Watercube in Beijing, Norman Foster’s Millau Viaduct in France and the Infinity Tower in Dubai.

The Postgraduate Library was officially opened on January 24th 2008 representing UCC’s most significant project under the Higher Education Authority’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) – Cycle 3.

The design and construction of the new five-storey building was overseen by UCC’s Buildings & Estates Office and included local architects, Wilson Architecture in association with Boston based architects, Shepley Bulfinch (SBRA).  Other team members included civil and structural engineers, Horgan Lynch, mechanical and electrical engineers, Arup, quantity surveyors, Davis Langdon PKS, fire safety engineers, Cantwell Keogh and acoustic engineering consultants AWN Consulting.  The main contractor was Michael McNamara and Company.
