NAIRTL expands its grants scheme
05.03.2009

NAIRTL (National Academy for the Integration of Research & Teaching & Learning) has announced the expansion of its grants scheme in support of the integration of research and teaching and learning in higher education.

The scheme is open to all 38 Higher Education Institutes in Ireland.

In 2008, NAIRTL funded over 50 projects including the creation of novel exhibits for science and technology third level students, using Web 2.0 techniques (blogs and wikis) to improve language teaching, and enhancing students’ learning through community engagement.

NAIRTL has now launched its new Grants Initiative for 2009 with small grants of up to €5,000 and larger grants of up to €20,000. It is envisaged that up to 30 small-scale projects and eight large-scale projects can be funded nationally over the period 2009/2010.

The National Academy is a multi-strand initiative designed to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. One strand of its activities is the provision of grants for researchers and academic staff. Applications for funding should reflect the fundamental linkages of research and teaching and learning upon which the National Academy is built. These linkages are represented in the following:

Research-led teaching and learning - the curriculum is informed by the research interests of academic staff, placing an emphasis on understanding research findings rather than research processes.
Research-oriented teaching and learning - the curriculum is focussed on understanding the processes by which knowledge is produced in the field as much as on learning the content of a subject, giving inquiry based skills greater credence.
Research-based teaching and learning - the curriculum emphasises activities where students conduct research, reducing the divisions between academic staff and students.
Research-informed teaching and learning - the curriculum is designed and continually adapted by teachers as they research their own work from a “scholarship of teaching” perspective, so that the focus is on educational rather than on disciplinary research.
