“The importance of 10 years of PRTLI to Food and Health Research at UCC” – UCC Lecture
04.03.2009

UCC’s Research Highlights Lecture Series will continue with the next lecture on Friday next, March 6th when Professor Kevin Cashman will discuss the importance of 10 years of Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) to Food and Health Research at UCC.
The Food and Health research theme at UCC is a long-standing multi-disciplinary, trans-department, trans-College, strategic research cluster with a focus on improving health and well-being through advances in research.  It represents a convergence of researchers from disciplines in medicine, microbiology, nutrition, food sciences, and consumer studies amongst others.  The Food and Health research theme at the university has been funded under PRTLI cycles 1, 3 and 4.  It plays an important role in supporting Food - a core indigenous industry in Ireland, of huge significance to the national economy.  The importance of food research was highlighted by its listing among five national research priorities in the Government’s Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (2006-2013).

In his lecture, Professor Cashman will overview the Food and Health research theme at UCC and illustrate how PRTLI funding for food and health research has provided the impetus for achievement of critical mass in this area.  UCC now leads a network of Food and Health researchers on the island of Ireland.  Professor Cashman will also show how the research activities help address the research needs of industry and other stakeholders.

Kevin Cashman is Head of the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, UCC and coordinator of the PRTLI-Cycle 4 UCC-led Irish Food and Health Research Alliance, which is a national collaborative research programme.

To celebrate 10 years of PRTLI investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The lecture will take place on Friday, March 6th at 1.00pm in the Kane G2, UCC. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
