16.04.2008

Almost 400 female students from all over Ireland are registered for UCC's annual WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) Programme which takes place today and tomorrow, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th April.

The aim of the WISE programme is to encourage more female students in transition year and fifth year to consider careers in Engineering, and the Mathematical, Physical and Chemical Sciences

Mag O'Keeffe, Mechanical Engineering graduate and senior manager at Stryker Ireland, opened the WISE Programme this morning. Dr Anca Mustata, UCC lecturer in Mathematics will close the event tomorrow afternoon.

Students will participate in dynamic and exciting workshops, highlighting the role of engineering in everyday life with particular focus on those areas offered as undergraduate programmes at UCC - Process & Chemical; Electrical; Civil & Environmental and the newest addition, Energy Engineering. The programme also includes presentations on Physics, Mathematical Sciences and the popular Chemistry Magic Show.

Following the WISE event is UCC's Spring Open Day on Friday, 18th April when some 4,000 Transition and Fifth Year students will be on campus for a day-long programme of activities.  Students can avail of a presentation providing a general overview of UCC; visit information stands on each programme representing the four Colleges in the University and go on guided tours of campus.

Both the WISE Programme and the Open Day are organised by the Admissions Office, UCC.  Visit: http://www.ucc.ie/workingwithschools/
