UCC's Faculty of Law formalises links with China
23.10.2008

The first link in the discipline of law between Ireland and China has been formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UCC's Faculty of Law and the Chinese University, East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL).
UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, who is currently in China, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Faculty of Law. The signing took place in Cork's sister city of Shanghai following an Enterprise Ireland business meeting attended by members of an Irish trade and education delegation and their Chinese guests. To mark the event, ECUPL will offer a full scholarship to one UCC Law student to study in Shanghai.

The new partnership - the first of its kind in Ireland - between the School of Law, ECUPL and the Faculty of Law, UCC, marks a further step in the internationalisation of legal education in UCC. "Law graduates with knowledge and understanding of Chinese society, its institutions of governance, its legal systems and ways of life, will make a significant contribution to Ireland's knowledge economy and society in the future", said Dr Murphy.

Reflecting the growing interest in expanding cooperation between Ireland and China, the ECUPL-UCC Law link will introduce a new pathway into the undergraduate BCL International programme.  UCC Law students on the programme will, for the first time, have the opportunity to pursue a third year abroad in China and to pursue Chinese language studies as part of their degree programme in UCC.

In recent years the study of law has expanded rapidly to include a growing range of international law courses and programmes. The opportunity to study specialised taught and research programmes in areas such as International Trade law, International Criminal law, Cyber law, E-commerce, European Union law, Environmental law, is likely to be of particular interest to Chinese law students.

Through the establishment of a staff exchange and visiting scholar programme, it is hoped that this partnership will facilitate collaborative research between academics in ECUPL and UCC Law, building on the growing demand for transnational legal research in a range of fields.

Dr Siobhan Mullally, Faculty of Law, UCC said: "We are delighted that this has come to fruition and that the President signed the MoU on our behalf. I have had the pleasure of visiting ECUPL and look forward to working closely with my Shanghai colleagues in the future."
