Confucius Institute Partnership formally launched in Shanghai

The Confucius Institute was formally launched at Shanghai University earlier this week in the presence of Mr Batt O'Keeffe, Minister for Education and Science and Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC.
Also in attendance were Professor Wang Qi, Deputy Director of Education Commission of Shanghai Municipality and Dr Zhou Zhewei, Executive Vice President of Shanghai University.

The UCC Confucius Institute is a joint venture between University College Cork and Shanghai University and is an integrated part of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC.  It was approved by both universities and the Headquarters of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing in November 2007.

Dr Murphy said that the establishment of the Confucius Institute in UCC will greatly enhance UCC's capacity to provide education on China to the broader society and, in particular, to the business community embarking on trade with China.
 
Mr Batt O'Keeffe, Minister of Education and Science, said "I am especially delighted that UCC and Shanghai University are now partner institutions in important areas."

Following the ceremony, the Minister and UCC President met with UCC students who are studying at Shanghai University for one year as part of their programme - BA in Chinese Studies.

Professor Fan Hong, the Director of Confucius Institute, and Ms Louise Tobin, Director of International Students Recruitment and Strategy of UCC, Mr Pat Ledwidge, Cork City Council also participated in the ceremony.
